Inflammation: A Hidden Threat to Heart Health

By Dr. Michael Barber, Medical Director and Cardiologist at Strata Med

In recent years, the combination of traditional Western medicine with complementary and Eastern approaches has created a more personalized, effective way to address heart health. One of the most overlooked factors in cardiovascular disease is inflammation, which plays a significant role in many heart-related conditions.

More than 100 years ago, the scientist Virchow discovered that inflammation contributes to the formation of plaque in arteries, a process known as atherosclerosis. For much of the 20th century, however, atherosclerosis was mostly seen as a passive buildup of cholesterol. While inflammation is generally helpful for healing, when it becomes chronic, it can lead to ongoing damage and increase the risk of serious health issues.

Today, it’s clear that inflammation is a key driver of atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular problems. Because of this connection, targeting it could be an effective way to prevent and treat heart disease. Although there is no direct evidence that treating inflammation alone can reverse atherosclerosis, clinical studies have shown that managing it through lifestyle changes and alternative therapies can slow its progression and reduce complications.

To manage cardiovascular disease effectively, it’s important to address not only the well-known risk factors, like high cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking, lack of exercise, diabetes, and obesity, but also the less obvious causes of inflammation. These include chronic stress, poor diet, nerve dysfunction, low-grade infections, and an overactive immune system. Even if traditional risk factors are controlled, life-threatening heart events can still occur, highlighting the need for a more comprehensive approach.

A key part of this approach is measuring inflammation through specific blood tests. Biomarkers like high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), myeloperoxidase, and lipoprotein-associated phospholipase-A2 (Lp-PLA2) are linked to a higher risk of heart events, regardless of standard risk factors. Identifying these markers can help guide treatment and significantly lower the risk of heart disease.

At Strata, we take a holistic approach to cardiovascular health by identifying potential risk factors and using evidence-based therapies to reduce inflammation. While medications may sometimes be necessary, we’ve found that addressing the root causes of inflammation through lifestyle changes and targeted interventions can prevent heart disease from progressing.

Here are some lifestyle changes that can significantly lower your risk of cardiovascular disease:

  • Eat anti-inflammatory foods: Focus on nutrient-rich, whole foods like fruits, vegetables, fatty fish, and healthy fats.
  • Avoid inflammatory foods: Minimize processed foods, sugars, and trans fats.
  • Quit smoking: Smoking speeds up inflammation and greatly increases the risk of heart disease.
  • Limit or avoid alcohol: Excessive drinking can worsen inflammation and harm the heart.
  • Manage stress: Practices like meditation, deep breathing, acupuncture, and massage can help reduce stress-related inflammation.
  • Maintain a healthy weight: Carrying excess weight can increase inflammation and cardiovascular risk.
  • Exercise regularly: Physical activity is one of the best ways to reduce inflammation and support heart health.
  • Prioritize sleep: Getting enough quality sleep is crucial for lowering inflammation and maintaining overall health.
